This week, a light dusting of snow graced parts of the Sierra, yet it fell short of what ski resorts need to kick off the winter season. Many have had to delay their openings due to unseasonably warm weather and erratic storm patterns.

Resorts are increasingly relying on specialists dedicated to creating winter conditions when nature doesn’t cooperate. Brendan Ryan, affectionately known as “Mr. Snow,” is one such expert.

Meet the Snowmaking Specialist

Brendan Ryan, a principal at Alpine Solutions, collaborates with ski resorts nationwide to devise optimal snowmaking strategies. His passion for snow began in childhood.

“Neighbors would wonder why I was always outside in the snow,” Ryan reminisced. “Turning that fascination into a career was a natural progression for me.”

Ryan now travels extensively, helping resorts produce consistent snow despite unpredictable weather.

Adapting to Climate Change

At Sugar Bowl Resort, preparations for the season are underway, but climate change is reshaping the landscape.

“Snowmaking is becoming crucial as climate change progresses,” noted John Slaughter, Sugar Bowl’s Marketing Director.

Resorts can no longer depend solely on natural storm cycles. Factors like warmer nights, variable humidity, and strong winds dictate whether snow machines can operate.

“It’s not as simple as turning on the machines,” Slaughter explained. “Even during snowfall, high humidity can prevent snowmaking.”

Innovative Solutions for Snowmaking

Due to these challenges, Sugar Bowl has initiated a comprehensive plan to enhance its snowmaking capabilities.

“We’re expanding our snowmaking system as part of a long-term project,” Slaughter said.

Each resort faces unique hurdles, from elevation differences to water availability, requiring tailored solutions.

“Every location is distinct,” Ryan stated. “In Conway, New Hampshire, conditions differ significantly from Sugar Bowl. Our goal is to create exceptional skiing experiences using air and water.”

Despite recent natural snowfall, experts agree that the primary challenge is adapting to a changing climate.
