Local Christmas Trees: A Unique Tradition in Gunbarrel

In Gunbarrel, a family-run business offers a special touch to the holiday season by selling Christmas trees native to Colorado. There’s still time to pick up one of these unique trees for your festivities.

While these trees might not win beauty contests, Colorado Native Christmas Trees embraces their charm, affectionately dubbing them “Charlie Brown trees.” Despite their unconventional appearance, Michael Smith notes that they have a dedicated customer base.

“We have many loyal customers who return year after year,” Smith shares.

A Family Legacy and Community Focus

Smith explains that his grandfather has been running this quaint lot for over four decades, with help from family and friends.

“My brother, some friends, and I, along with my grandpa, all pitch in to cut the trees,” Smith explains.

However, their motivation extends beyond profit. Their efforts are rooted in community service.

“It’s about fire prevention and forest management. We’re supporting the land and the loggers, who are becoming scarce,” Smith adds.

Most of their earnings are donated to charity, so while the trees may not be the most glamorous, they contribute positively to both the environment and the community.

Customer Loyalty and Local Impact

Christina Hildebrandt is one of the many who return to the lot on North 97th Street and Lookout Road each year.

“I’ve been coming here for about three years,” Hildebrandt mentions.

She supports their mission wholeheartedly.

“Knowing these trees come from nearby mountains, rather than being transported from far-off places like Oregon, is important to me. Supporting local businesses and adapting to local shopping habits is crucial,” Hildebrandt explains.

Visit the Lot

If you’re interested in purchasing a tree from Colorado Native Christmas Trees, the lot opens daily at 9 a.m. It closes at 8 p.m. on weekdays, 9 p.m. on Saturdays, and 7 p.m. on Sundays.
