Discovering the Hidden Gem of Campus: The Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building
At first glance, the outskirts of campus might not catch your eye. Many students only head towards the Multipurpose Science and Technology Building for those early morning classes. Yet, nestled in this area is a true treasure: the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB).
A Modern Marvel: The ISEB
Completed in late 2020 and welcoming its first visitors in 2023, the ISEB stands proudly near the Physical Sciences Lecture Hall. This six-story structure offers a blend of workspaces, offices, study areas, and collaborative zones.
With its striking curtain-wall windows and sleek, futuristic architecture, the building is a testament to sustainable design, becoming an integral part of Anteater culture.
Commitment to Sustainability
Designed with both students and faculty in mind, the ISEB provides 200,000 square feet of workspace. It aligns with UC’s sustainability goals, exceeding the California Energy Code by over 55% and aiming for the prestigious LEED Platinum certification.
LEED, known as the world’s leading green building rating system, evaluates buildings based on functionality and sustainability, offering four certification levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.
Safety and Innovation
In an industry where construction-related accidents are prevalent, the ISEB has been recognized with the Liberty Mutual Silver Safety Award for its commitment to worker safety.
The Center for Construction Research and Training highlights this award for its focus on reducing hazards that lead to injuries in the construction sector.
Architectural Excellence
Designed by LMN Architects from Seattle, the ISEB showcases the expertise of a multidisciplinary team, including architects, urban designers, and sustainability experts.
LMN Architects have an impressive portfolio, including the Seattle Asian Art Museum and the Hawai’i Convention Center. They also designed UCI’s Anteater Learning Pavilion, which opened in 2018.
A Hub for Learning and Collaboration
The ISEB exemplifies how campus buildings can be both functional and sustainable, offering a modern, clean aesthetic that attracts students seeking study spaces between classes.
Its location near key STEM facilities makes it a convenient choice for students in those fields. Fourth-year biological sciences major Tesvara Cao shared her preference for studying at the ISEB, citing its spacious and modern design.
“I often choose between the library and this building for studying,” Cao mentioned. “Its spaciousness and modern vibe make it one of my top picks.”
Beyond serving undergraduates, the upper floors of the ISEB provide collaborative spaces, labs, and offices, making it a vital resource for the UCI community.
