Keweenaw Peninsula Gears Up for a Thriving Winter Season | PRIMENEWSNOW
Early Snowfall Marks Promising Winter for Keweenaw Peninsula
RIPLEY, Mich. (WLUC) – An organization in the western Upper Peninsula is celebrating an early snowfall milestone this year.
Following last weekend’s snow, Visit Keweenaw reports that the Keweenaw Peninsula is nearing the 100-inch mark. Executive Director Brad Barnett highlights that this early accumulation suggests a favorable winter forecast for the region.
Snowfall Ahead of Schedule
“We’re currently about 20 inches ahead,” Barnett noted. “Last January, we had accumulated between 70 and 80 inches, so we’re approximately two weeks ahead this year.”
This early snow has caught the attention of tourists, with early bookings showing strong numbers. Barnett advises local business owners to prepare for a good season, though he anticipates it might not match last year’s activity.
Economic Factors and Visitor Demand
“The demand isn’t as intense as it was previously, and the current economic climate is a bit more challenging,” Barnett explained. “I expect a season similar to last year, perhaps slightly less busy, but still robust if the weather remains favorable.”
Mont Ripley Ski Area Prepares for the Season
Mont Ripley, a popular winter destination, has seen favorable conditions since opening on December 12. General Manager Chris Maxson reports that the transition from rain to snow has been beneficial for establishing a solid base for skiing.
“The shift from rain to freezing rain and then to snow is ideal early in the season,” Maxson said. “It helps fill gaps and creates a strong foundation for skiing.”
Maxson is eager for the upcoming business and the start of the ski area’s training and after-school programs next week.
