Unraveling the Mysteries of Crime Scene Science | PRIMENEWSNOW
At Ohio Northern University, students delve into the practical aspects of forensic science, engaging in activities such as analyzing blood spatter at the Crime Scene House and utilizing the Forensic Science Training Center.
Students gain experience with the AFIX Tracker, an advanced system for fingerprint identification, across three dedicated workstations.
They also learn to extract human DNA from hair samples and perform mitochondrial DNA sequence analysis using Sanger Sequencing.
In addition, students dissect human cadavers, study primate extremities, and conduct research on pathogens like Avian influenza, mpox, and Cryptosporidium serpentis.
This sophisticated tool performs both Sanger sequencing and STR analysis on DNA samples, even detecting DNA from challenging sources like spent ammunition.
According to Dr. Dennis De Luca, professor of biological sciences, this equipment ensures that graduates are well-prepared for the industry and supports DNA research across various ONU programs.
ONU’s forensic biology program, the second oldest in Ohio and ranked third nationally by ForensicsColleges.com, is renowned for its immersive learning approach.
“Our curriculum is designed to be hands-on, with every course featuring a lab component,” De Luca stated.
Students also minor in chemistry and build a strong foundation in biology, mathematics, and analytical sciences, preparing them for diverse career paths.
Approximately 30-35% of graduates pursue further education in medical or law schools, or advanced scientific research, while 60-65% secure roles in forensic laboratories.
Sarah Sheldon, a junior inspired by TV shows like CSI, found her passion for forensics through a high school course and chose ONU for its comprehensive program.
“The variety of courses, from DNA to anthropology to toxicology, helps you discover your career path,” she shared, noting her interest in anthropology.
Her summer internship at Texas State University’s Forensic Anthropology Center, facilitated by ONU professors, was a highlight of her education.
“Our professors have extensive field experience and connections that help secure amazing opportunities,” she explained.
Nina Zibbel, a senior aiming for a career in a forensic lab, chose ONU for its practical learning experiences.
“Participating in crime scene simulations and using advanced instruments like the genetic analyzer is invaluable,” she said.
