New Mexico’s Initiative to Alleviate Student Debt for Health Workers

The New Mexico Higher Education Department has announced a significant initiative to ease student debt for over 400 health professionals through its Health Professional Loan Repayment Program.

Expanding Support for Health Professionals

Currently, 1,213 healthcare workers in New Mexico benefit from this program, with 401 new participants joining this year alone. The initiative provides $24.4 million in debt relief, contingent upon these professionals serving in high-demand areas across the state for at least three years.

Diverse Fields Benefiting from the Program

This year, the program has supported a wide range of healthcare fields, including 56 allied health practitioners, 102 mental health experts, 128 nurses, 104 medical doctors, and 11 dental professionals.

Impact and Growth of the Program

Higher Education Secretary Stephanie M. Rodriguez emphasized the program’s transformative impact since its inception in 2019, stating, “The Health Professional Loan Repayment Program is one of the most significant investments in New Mexico’s future. It has grown exponentially, enhancing healthcare access across the state and ensuring residents receive timely care.”

Since its launch, the program has expanded by an impressive 3,500 percent, covering over 25 eligible health occupations, including medical doctors, nurse practitioners, mental health counselors, and more.

Eligibility and Application Details

For those interested, a comprehensive list of eligible professions is available on the New Mexico Higher Education Department’s website. Applications for the program open annually on March 15.
