  • Matt Calkins, CEO of Appian, halted an AI project for résumé screening.
  • He argues that human judgment is crucial in identifying standout candidates.
  • This reflects a broader issue of AI misapplication in businesses.

According to Matt Calkins, CEO of Appian, many organizations are not leveraging AI effectively, starting with basic tasks like résumé evaluation.

“We aim to be cutting-edge, but relying on AI for hiring at a high level leads to a checkbox mentality,” Calkins shared with Business Insider during a recent media dinner.

AI has significantly transformed the job market and recruitment processes.

While tech giants like Google and Salesforce have integrated AI to assist in candidate evaluation, many firms still depend on recruiters to sift through applications. The goal is to streamline the initial screening, allowing recruiters to concentrate on top-tier candidates.

Some job seekers are reverting to traditional paper résumés to stand out amidst the digital deluge. Meanwhile, some hiring managers are opting for face-to-face interviews to foster genuine connections.

Calkins worries that relying solely on AI might cause Appian to overlook exceptional talent. Founded in 1999, Appian specializes in cloud computing and enterprise software.

“We should be able to recognize potential in applicants without AI,” he remarked. “It’s about seeing the unique qualities in people, not just academic achievements.”

Misguided AI Applications in Business

Calkins also highlighted that companies are missing opportunities beyond hiring. An MIT study revealed that 95% of businesses have yet to see returns from their generative AI investments. Calkins finds it astonishing that such a revolutionary technology is being underutilized.

“The issue is a lack of understanding in applying AI effectively,” he explained. “AI should be integrated into core operations, not just peripheral tasks.”

He suggests that AI could better serve large corporations by tackling significant challenges, such as managing overwhelming communication streams.

“Corporations receive millions of communications daily, from emails to faxes, covering diverse topics,” he noted.

Appian has successfully addressed this by developing AI capable of interpreting various communication forms, routing tasks, and updating databases with 99% accuracy.

“It’s impressive yet mundane work,” Calkins said. “It’s not flashy enough for a Super Bowl ad, so many remain unaware of AI’s true potential.”
