Reflecting on a Transformative Journey

Looking back over the past four years, it’s astonishing to see how much I’ve evolved as a student, journalist, and individual. With graduation just around the corner, the journey feels surreal.

Introduction to Journalism

For those curious about the person behind the screen, I’m Jonathan Shelby, currently pursuing a degree in journalism while working part-time as the Assistant Lifestyle Editor at the Northern Star.

Interestingly, my choice to study journalism wasn’t driven by a clear career vision. Instead, it stemmed from my passion for writing, which seemed like a natural fit after some initial research.

Embracing the Challenge

Journalism has become an integral part of my identity, and my respect for the field has grown immensely. It’s far from easy, a lesson I learned firsthand after joining the Northern Star in September 2023.

It’s hard to believe that over two years have passed since then. I vividly recall almost backing out due to self-doubt, but I’m grateful I took the plunge.

Growth and Learning

My roles as a lifestyle writer, assistant lifestyle editor, and lifestyle editor have been invaluable learning experiences, fostering growth in unexpected areas.

Initially, I joined the Northern Star to enhance my resume, but I gained so much more: improved writing, planning, communication, and leadership skills, along with the opportunity to collaborate with amazing people.

Evolution of Content

The “Weekend Rundown” evolved into the “Weekly Writeup” and eventually the “Rundown of the Week.”

When I first hosted the Rundown in 2023, I couldn’t have predicted its transformation. This semester, being recognized as the “Rundown of the Week” guy by viewers has been incredibly rewarding, knowing the series is fulfilling its purpose of highlighting exciting events.

Overcoming Challenges

Of course, there were tough times. Late nights spent writing and editing, along with tight deadlines, often clashed with my academic responsibilities. Yet, I persevered through these challenges.

The Northern Star has shaped me in ways I never imagined, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

To all my readers, whether you’ve followed my work closely or just skimmed through, to fans of the Rundown of the Week, my supportive family, my professors who taught me the intricacies of journalism, and my colleagues at the Northern Star – thank you. You’ve all contributed to my growth as a writer and person, and I am deeply appreciative.

For anyone hesitant about taking a leap, whether it’s joining the Northern Star or pursuing an uncertain path, I encourage you to take that step. You never know how it might transform you, and I certainly don’t regret my decision.
