U-M Health-Sparrow Ionia Unveils $28M Center to Revolutionize Health Services | PRIMENEWSNOW
New Healthcare Facility to Enhance Rural Medical Services
The University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Ionia is set to construct a state-of-the-art outpatient clinic adjacent to the hospital. This $28 million initiative aims to elevate healthcare accessibility for rural residents.
The University of Michigan Board of Regents gave the green light on November 20. The project will be financed through U-M Health-Sparrow’s own resources, as per the official announcement.
Design and Construction Timeline
Connie O’Malley, COO of the U-M Health Regional Network, shared that the design phase for the two-story, 31,000-square-foot facility will commence in January, lasting approximately nine months. Construction is slated to begin thereafter, with the center expected to open by spring or summer 2028.
Comprehensive Medical Services
The new center will offer a range of services, including primary care, oncology, orthopedics, cardiology, and advanced diagnostic imaging like MRI. An expanded infusion center is also part of the plan.
O’Malley noted that the facility will require additional staff to support these services, enhancing the overall healthcare delivery in the region.
Strategic Location and Connectivity
Situated south of the existing hospital on a 42-acre property owned by the health system, the new center will be directly linked to the hospital. The hospital, established in 2015, is a critical access facility with 22 beds, LEED certification, and board-certified emergency physicians.
Addressing Community Needs
Margaret Dimond, president of the U-M Health Regional Network, emphasized the necessity of the expansion, citing significant growth in patient numbers over the past decade. “We are dedicated to bringing essential healthcare services closer to home for rural communities like Ionia County,” she stated.
O’Malley highlighted the convenience the new center will offer, reducing travel time for patients who currently drive long distances for care. “Our goal is to establish a comprehensive statewide network, ensuring continued access for our patients,” she added.
