Meta Teams Up with ams OSRAM to Revolutionize MicroLED Tech | PRIMENEWSNOW
Meta’s Strategic Move into MicroLED Technology
Recent reports from MICROLED-info suggest that Meta is joining forces with ams OSRAM to advance microLED technology. Meta’s Reality Labs has set up a dedicated microLED research team in Regensburg, close to ams OSRAM’s primary research and production facilities. The company is actively recruiting engineers for this initiative, and several experts from ams OSRAM have transitioned to Meta.
Commitment to Innovation
Although official confirmation is pending, Meta’s dedication to microLED technology is evident. In 2020, Meta secured an agreement with Plessey to utilize its entire microLED production capacity for Meta’s projects. Despite earlier speculation about the project’s discontinuation, Meta and Plessey announced in early 2025 the development of the brightest red microLED display for augmented reality (AR) glasses.
Collaborative Ventures
If Meta’s collaboration with ams OSRAM is confirmed, it could have significant implications for Plessey. It seems plausible that Meta is engaging with multiple microLED suppliers to diversify its technological capabilities.
Meta’s AR Innovations
In September 2024, Meta unveiled its Orion AR headset, incorporating microLED technology, reportedly sourced from JBD. This marks a significant step in Meta’s AR journey.
Emerging Display Technologies
Meta’s latest AI AR headset, the Ray-Ban Display, features LCoS display technology. According to TrendForce, this transition is projected to increase LCoS’s market share in AR displays to 13% by 2026. Meanwhile, LEDoS technology is not expected to see significant advancements in performance and cost until 2028, setting the stage for heightened competition between these technologies.
