Epic Showdown: Garfield Takes on Roosevelt in East L.A. Classic Football Battle | PRIMENEWSNOW
Anticipation Builds for the East L.A. Classic
Throughout the football season, coaches emphasize the importance of staying in the moment. However, the excitement surrounding the Garfield vs. Roosevelt matchup is hard to ignore.
“Since January, all I hear is about this game,” shared Roosevelt’s coach, Ernesto Ceja. “People keep asking, ‘Will you defeat Garfield?’ I tell them, ‘Let me assemble the team first!'”
A Historic Rivalry
Celebrating its 90th anniversary, the East L.A. Classic is a dual homecoming event that draws the largest crowd of the season. The festivities kick off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at East Los Angeles College, with a JV game at 4 p.m., followed by a girls’ flag football match, and then the varsity showdown. DJ Mustard will entertain during halftime.
Security and Community Assurance
Amid concerns about ICE activities in Los Angeles, East L.A. College assures attendees of their safety. L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies, campus police, and private security will monitor all entrances. The college successfully hosted 11 high school graduations last summer without incident, ensuring fans can attend with peace of mind. Tickets are available at GoFan.co.
Teams on the Rise
Garfield is on the brink of clinching the Eastern League title with a 6-2 overall record and a perfect 5-0 in league play. Meanwhile, Roosevelt, standing at 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the league, has gained momentum with three consecutive wins after adopting a double-wing offense.
Community Spirit
During a media day at East Los Angeles College, Garfield principal Regina Marquez Martinez expressed pride in the community, saying, “We’re as American as apple pie and pan dulce.” LAUSD board member Rocio Rivas added, “Let’s go East L.A. Let’s go Boyle Heights.”
