Slater’s Landmark Land Gift Set to Become a Community Legacy | PRIMENEWSNOW
Craig and Julie Weeks, longtime residents of Slater, have generously donated 18 acres on the city’s northwest boundary, paving the way for the Trailside Sports Complex.
This contribution has sparked the development of a versatile recreational center that promises to benefit future generations.
The planned complex will include four fields suitable for both baseball and softball, a vast grassy area that can accommodate high school soccer and various youth games, and a large parking area that also serves as an entry point to the High Trestle Trail.
“Once completed, it will be an outstanding project,” stated Slater Mayor Taylor Christensen.
Trailside Project Features a Six-Acre Pond
As part of the Trailside Sports Complex, a six-acre pond has been established, stocked in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Next summer, plans include adding a fishing dock, along with walking paths that connect back to the High Trestle Trail, transforming the complex into a hub for outdoor activities beyond just sports.
Progress Already Underway
In the past two years, city officials have been busy securing funds, obtaining grants, and preparing the site for the Trailside Sports Complex.
This summer, a $68,000 grant from Story County facilitated the land grading, setting the stage for future construction.
The total project is estimated to cost over $6 million, but efforts are being made to cut costs through strategic engineering and contributions from local contractors willing to offer labor or materials.
By fall 2026, the soccer fields are expected to be ready for use. The baseball and softball fields, complete with lighting, are anticipated to be finished within the project’s five-year timeline, fulfilling the vision of a comprehensive sports facility.
Strategic Location Near Trails
The “Trailside Sports Complex” name highlights its strategic location.
Situated less than 30 yards from the High Trestle Trail, the fields provide easy access for athletes, families, and visitors, according to Christensen.
The combination of sports fields and natural attractions near one of Iowa’s favorite trails positions the project as a potential regional attraction.
Julie Weeks, who recently joined the Slater City Council, and her husband Craig have not only invested in the city’s future but have also created a space for local families to gather and enjoy. Their land donation, valued at millions, marks a significant contribution to Slater’s history, Christensen noted.
For Slater, the Trailside Sports Complex is more than just new fields; it symbolizes generosity, foresight, and community pride.
